There are items of furniture that can simply do everything. The bench is one of them. It fits into every room, solves a lot of furnishing problems and still looks great.

Beforehand the corner bench could be found in the kitchens of many homes and was often a really integral part. The comfortable, typically Swiss seat also offered storage space because the seating area was made of hinged lids. The new benches don’t look like that any more though. They are not chests and are not at all inflexible. Simple, without a backrest, mostly made out of wood, or sometimes out of steel, they have become sought-after pieces of occasional furniture.

So where is this truly very humble piece of super furniture destined for? It is for example a definite asset as a piece of furniture for the entrance. Slim, the bench also fits into small, narrow entrances, offers a nice storage area as well as a place to sit when taking off and putting on shoes.

In the living room, it can be used instead of a sideboard. It offers space for table lamps, books, living accessories and pictures, and under it you can stack magazines and store baskets and boxes. The bench also provides a nice coffee table or side table. It looks great and is also very practical for example beside or behind a sofa or a corner suite.

In the bedroom, the bench is the right choice for the end of the bed. If you add a bench to the foot of the bed, you have space there for books, an extra cushion and your tablet with breakfast. The bed will also therefore be a bit bordered off from the rest of the room. In the bathroom, a bench can replace a shelf and also offer a space to sit. In the kitchen, a comfortable wooden bench adds a homely touch and also provides storage as well as a seating area.

Indoor plants in nice pots and baskets are back in fashion again. They look a lot better, like generally all home décor pieces, if they are placed in groups and not distributed separately all over the place. And what helps with that? A bench! A bench is also a good place for piling up magazines and books and makes these look organised and homely. This is because it makes things tidy, collects things together and in so doing also conveys a certain haphazardness that makes a home personal and cosy.

Obviously the bench is also a great place for sitting. It is less complicated and more personal at a table than, for example, lots of identical chairs. It is also the perfect solution for saving space. A bench in the right size can also be tucked under the table. With nice upholstered cushions, it also offers a cosy seating area at the window, in an alcove or in a passageway.

Given that benches are mostly light pieces of furniture, they fit into our daily lives well because we can use them flexibly. It is also a lighter look than for example a sideboard because it is really just a plank on legs. And, what’s more, some rustic or antique pieces do an urban home good. You can therefore calmly choose an old bench, it offers a homely touch and contrast in a modern, design-oriented set-up.
